Six parties at the Armenian Parliament


On May 25, 2003 elections to the Republic of Armenia National Assembly took place in Armenia. On the same day Referendum for introducing amendments to the Constitution of Armenia was held. 17 parties and 4 party blocs took part in the elections by proportional system. While273 candidates were registered to participate by the majoritarian system.
According to data from the Central Electoral Committee, the 50,1% of the 2.4 million citizens that had the right to vote participated in the process.

1,216,581 citizens took part in the referendum. 563,205 people voted for and 550,668 people - against the amendments to the Supreme Law.
According to Article 113 of the Republic of Armenia Constitution, "a proposed legislation submitted to a referendum shall be considered to have been passed if it receives more than fifty percent of the votes, but not less than one third of the number of registered voters."
Thus, the amendments have not been passed as the necessary number of votes was not gained: the total number of registered votes is 2,334,993.

According to preliminary results, six parties/party blocs have overcome the 5% barrier, required to be represented in the National Assembly.
They are:

  • Armenian Republican Party.....22,52% (278.029 votes)
  • "Justice" Coalition (Artarootioon).....13,02% (160.796 votes)
  • "Legitimate Country" (Orinats Yergir).....11,83% (146.035 votes)
  • Dashnaktsootioon (ARF)....10,94% (135.096 votes)
  • "Azkayin Miapanootioon" Coalition.....8,42% (103.938 votes)
  • United Labor Party.....5,50% (67.863 votes)

1.234.546 voters took part in the elections. The 75 National Assembly seats that are being occupied according to the party lists, are allocated as follows according to preliminary data from the Central Electoral Committee (CEC):

  • 23 Republican Party
  • 14 "Justice" Coalition
  • 12 "Legitimate Country
  • 11 Dashnaktsootioon
  •   9 "Azkayin Miapanootioon" Coalition
  •   6 United Labor Party

The remaining 56 National Assembly seats (majority candidates from single member constituencies) are allocated as follows (preliminary CEC data):

  • 37 non partisan
  • 9 Republican party of Armenia
  • "Legitimate Country" party (Orinats Yergir)
  • 1 "Republic" party
  • 1 Pan-Armenian Party of Workers

Armenian citizens that inhabit abroad, had also the right to vote, who exercised their prerogative. Almost 5.000 Armenians voted.

In Greece voted 251 people from whom the 208 said "YES" at the referendum for the change of the Constitution in Armenia, 29 "NO" while 14 voting-papers were invalid. Regarding the Parliamentary Elections the numbers are as follows:

  • Dashnaktsootioon (ARF).....101 votes
  • Armenian Republican Party.....73 votes
  • "Azkayin Miapanootioon" Coalition.....17 votes
  • "Justice" Coalition (Artarootioon).....12 votes
  • "Ramgavar Party" of Armenia.....5 votes
  • "Powerful Country" (Hzor Hayrenik).....5 votes
  • Á.É.Ì. (Christians).....5 votes
  • Christian-Democratic Party of Armenia.....4 votes
  • Communist Party of Armenia.....3 votes
  • "Legitimate Country" (Orinats Yergir).....3 votes
The remaining parties received 2 or less votes. There were 10 invalid voting-papers while 3 voted "against all".
